Tagata-Jinja Shrine, gods of fertility

Tagata-Jinja Shrine is the shrine of fertility for agriculture and human beings. This is probably one of the best know fertility shrines in Japan.

Its annual festival on March 15th is very popular among foreign tourists. On other days, the shrine is relatively quiet, and you can walk around and observe every detail of its secrets or something to be secrets Those who want to have healthy babies visit this shrine and worship. The history of this shrine can be traced back to about 1500 years ago, but its real origin is unknown. In the 10th century, this shrine was listed as a high ranking shrine throughout Japan.

In this shrine, you can see many sexual symbols of men. However, they are not very real and serious. They are huge and rather funny.

Mama Kannon Temple, breast temple

Compare to Tagata-Jinja Shrine, Mama Kannon Temple is less known to foreigners. While Tagata-Jinja Shrine is for fertility, Mama Kannon is for breasts and child care. So it is not really a kind of fertility shrines.

Mama Kannon’s “mama” does not mean mother in English. It’s just a coincidence and mama probably is the name of this place. Many women visit this temple and pray for a cure for breast cancer, having larger breasts or abundance of milk for their babies.

There are many breasts in this Temple. Many offerings are also hand-made breasts brought by female worshipers.
